What are Compression Stockings?

Compression stockings, also known as pressure stockings, are special socks that help to increase blood circulation.

Often used as a home remedy for varicose veins, compression stockings have proven effective at reducing visible signs of large veins, and in slowing their progression. In addition to at-home treatments, compression stockings are often used in conjunction with other varicose vein treatments.

Compression stockings use strong elastic to create substantial pressure on areas including the legs, ankles and feet. Compression stockings are tightest around the ankles and gradually become less intense as the stocking goes up your leg.

This pressure compresses surface veins as well as deeper arteries and muscles, thus forcing blood through narrower circulatory channels. This, in turn, increases arterial pressure, forcing blood out of the feet and reducing pooling.

Compression stockings may be sufficient to treat minor cases of varicose veins. In many instances, they may be combined with another form of vein treatment such as endovenous laser treatment (EVLT) to prevent a reoccurrence of varicose veins.
