Risks of Varicose Vein Treatment

Oklahoma endovascular specialist Dr. Dominic Pedulla and the team at the Oklahoma Vein & Endovascular Center offer safe, effective, nonsurgical varicose vein treatments.

However, while the procedures are minimally invasive and complications are rare, it’s important to remember that there are risks and side-effects possible with any medical procedure. Dr. Pedulla will thoroughly review the risks associated with each varicose vein treatment with you during your consultation.

Complications associated with endovenous laser treatment (EVLT), which utilizes a laser to close off the problem vein, may include:

  • Bruising
  • Swelling
  • Infection
  • Thrombophlebitis (inflammation of the vein)

Risks associated with sclerotherapy, in which an injectable solution is used to seal the affected vein, include:

  • Bruising
  • Red bumps
  • Small sores
  • Discolored skin
  • Inflammation
  • Blood clots

These complications are uncommon, and most side-effects of varicose vein treatment subside within a week or two following the procedure. Following the pre-procedure and recovery guidelines provided by Dr. Pedulla will also help minimize your risk of complications.
